Room area (sq ft) calculator

Site measurements come in feet and inches, quotations need square feet, and Gulf drawings come in metres. Type each room as you measured it, such as 15'6" by 12, and get the area in both units and the perimeter for skirting and cove.

How it is worked out

Each length is read in feet and inches or as a decimal, then the area is length times width and the perimeter is two times length plus width. The total adds every room. Areas are shown in the unit you chose and converted at 10.7639 square feet to one square metre.

Where you use these figures

  • Flooring, false ceiling and painting are quoted by area.
  • Skirting, cove lighting and profiles are quoted by perimeter, in running feet.
  • Wardrobes and kitchens use their own measures; see the tools for each.

Questions

How do I calculate the square feet of a room?

Multiply the length by the width, both in feet. A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 120 sq ft. For feet and inches, convert the inches to a fraction of a foot first: 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft.

How do I convert square feet to square metres?

Divide square feet by 10.764. 120 sq ft is about 11.15 sq m. To go the other way, multiply square metres by 10.764.

Can I type feet and inches?

Yes. Type 10'6" or 10' 6 or 10ft 6in, or the decimal 10.5. The calculator reads them all the same way.

What is the perimeter used for?

Skirting, cove lighting and wall painting are measured along the edges of a room. The perimeter, two times length plus width, gives that running length.
